bicycle ergometer testing
how do you test for VO2 max and what benfits do you gain from this?

VO2 on the ergometer bicycle,treadmill.

VO2max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilise per minute during a specific activity. It can be expressed in two ways: first in absolute terms (L.min-1), secondly in relative terms (ml.kg-1.min-1). Both have their uses.

It is important because it defines your aerobic ‘upper limit’. However, the percentage of that upper limit that you can maintain for a considerable time (otherwise known as maximal lactate steady-state, or MLSS) is a far more potent indicator of performance in endurance sports.

It is not really necessary to know your measured VO2max unless you plan on measuring it regularly. For cyclists, there are far more relevant field tests that can be used to track progress.

To get a really accurate test you’ll need to find a place that offers them. Some universities and high-end fitness centers for example, in Dallas the Cooper Clinic does VO2 testing.

There are also ways you can do yourself that are less accurate but still a decent guage that you can compare yourself against later.

Most of the articles I’m reading these days are de-emphasizing VO2 as a key measure; instead they look at other measures like economy or power at threshold.

Here’s a great library, and also their subscription pubs are top-notch:
