A history of Peugeot, Through Dresses, bicycles and cars
Although the Peugeot factory in the industry for many centuries it was not until 1889 that they decided to go in the car industry and begin to sell their cars through dealers. Peugeot originally manufactured crinoline dresses, which used steel rods for stiffness. Making this round bars led to the creation of cycling in the nineteenth century, the most famous is the Peugeot "Le Grand Bi '(Penny Farthing) bicycle.
Armand Peugeot when the company was originally known, the market for cars is not until late in the nineteenth century with a steam-driven three-wheeled car. Only four of these groundbreaking cars were made and as such is not done much on the forecourts of dealers. Steam was quickly forgotten by Peugeot in favor of the internal combustion engine with the help Gottlieb Daimler.
Peugeot have always been a leader in industry and in fact were the first company to fit rubber tires on their cars, although not of pneumatic and instead of solid rubber. It was at this point that Peugeot entered the engine racing, despite the cars resemble horse drawn carriages and still managed by a tiller.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, with three hundred dealers germ cars sold in 1899 to a total of 1200 cars sold across France. Peugeot bike not to mention their heritage also produced a motorcycle at the beginning of the century and continue to do so to this day. The success of the company as a national institution apparently had been insured for 1903 by more than half of car sales in France.
The company divided its energies during the twenties, one focused on the bikes and the other focusing on the cars. During this period, Peugeot was a affordable car dealership on their stations with the type 201, the cheapest car in France. Innovation has always been a consistent theme, the development of the withdrawal roof was an attempt to rich French with stylistic designs and luxury cars coax. The curved and rounded bodies Peugeot headlights of this period features in the design for generations.
In the fifties Peugeot dealerships opened in America trying to capture some of the flowering economy in the postwar States. It was at this point that many collaborations with other European companies has occurred, such as a combined effort with Renault and Volvo in 1966 1972. The company has also used the wonderful design house Pininfarina capabilities of the models even more attractive to buyers.
The seventies saw a significant step by Peugeot to take over rival French manufacturer, Citroen. This meant an even wider number of dealers to set up and meant that the formation of PSA (Peugeot Société Anonyme) Peugeot were part of the largest car manufacturer in France. PSA working on keeping the company's separate identities throughout this period and the distinctive flare of each brand continues to this day.
With continued growth and successful dealers throughout Europe, Peugeot were able to purchase European division of Chrysler. This had varying success and in fact causes problems for the PSA's financial position. Despite a bad period in the eighties Peugeot were able to recover the losses from the previous decade back to earn a strong position in the nineties to reach. Despite the loss of American sales base in this period, the company still does well in Europe and will continue to with innovative technologies and quaint French styling.
Eventually, the company has a rich and diverse heritage, after a relatively modest beginning manufacturing dresses they succeeded in one of the automotive powerhouses of Europe. In today's highly competitive automotive industry that will be hard pressed to continue to grow as a popular and they had done in the last century remain.
