O'er desert sands, o'er gulf and bay, o'er and o'er Ganges Himalayan Bird-like I fly, fly and sing, flowery kingdoms of Cathay and bird-like attitude of a balanced wing above the city of King-te-tching. A burning town, or seeming so, – Three thousand furnaces that glow continuously, and the air with smoke rising filling, gyre on gyre, and painted by our sensational glare, radiation and flashes of red fire.
"Keramos" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1877.
Like Longfellow over a hundred years before we travel the summer of '87 to the same porcelain factory city of Cathay. Today is hot and Zingdezhen Cathay is China, but the city still has a thousand furnaces, some more than a thousand years old. Zingdezhen is known as the porcelain capital of the world.
It was not easy, our Zingdezhen route. First we booked on our daily Yangtze River steamer from Shanghai. It was romantic and exciting to the relatively modern passenger and cargo on board the boat at sunset. Rail-birds outside our cabin with a fresh cup of tea in hand, we sailed down the river Whangpoa, shutter breaking light gave. The scenes were the skylines of Shanghai and from ships the world at terminals or mid-channel anchor and modern cruise ships dressed in bright flags, emitting ant-link traffic of passengers on the famous Bund. Ferries plied the endless shores. Acct container bulged with their toy-like stacked boxes and gave the other side cranes and loaded onto ships and trucks. Rusty cargo ships and small vessels a river of a thousand species added to the eclectic mix, while we sat by the track and exchanged pleasantries with our new friends in the next cabin.
Two days later in the early afternoon we disembark at Jiujany, a busy port where the ancient emperors and entourages also docked centuries earlier. They were on their way to their favorite mountain resort of the Lushan. Even Mao Tse Tung had a villa in the cool forest of Lushan. If time permits when you visit, a few days there. You can imagine yourself as one of the royal staff, or sit at the desk of Mao's, still with rice paper and brushes pending further "judgments". Mao's slippers and robe hanging from a nearby clothing rack.
In the city of porcelain, claimed to be, but three hours away. We are working on a little red taxi (which was a Polish car assembly in China) and in just six hours driving on partially completed roads, and half a dozen river crossings by barge, we reached the ancient city of Zingdezhen.
Hotel complex high on a hill above a lake, China was in a forest glade-modern. The lobby, dining room and entrance was crowded with traders from around the world, but especially Hong Kong, we were Welcomes and nestled in a beautiful VIP suite. The living room was full of furniture, cabinets and tables and offered the inevitable thermos of hot water, complete with local Chinese tea service. The bathroom had hot water 5:00-9:00 and bath with claw feet old was welcomed as we soaked in the cramped conditions of the journey by road.
Our local guide spent the next few days guide us through factories to the exclusive porcelain that made his eye in this remote city for more than a thousand years. Enjoyed by the Chinese emperors, Arab princes and royalties Europe, the art porcelain ware found its way into every corner of the world. The Ming emperors had appointed their own factories, which use deep cobalt blue, while the Qing prefer the bright yellow, adorned with brightly feathered bird Phoenix. Eggshell porcelain of incredible delicacy are still produced. Classic figures of Kwan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, Xing Shou-Lao with his long beard and bald head symbolizes the wish for long life, Confucius and his favorites, each sculpted by talented artists.
The art form of porcelain to be enjoyed by everyone. Porcelain decorative vases are available as documents and the "show" pieces "are allowed with modern innovation. Zingdezhen porcelain heirlooms grace of the houses and museums of the world.
