How the Heck Do Those Spinning Bikes Work?

I recently received an email from my client, Cindy, on Spinning bikes. Cindy asked if she spinning class could take to add some variety to her workout. I said sure assuming they had looked into it a bit or at least looked in the window of the room, while a class was going on.

Well needless to say, Cindy didn't have an idea what the intensity would be or that they realize the spinning bikes are different than any other bike she had ever driven before.

For those of you who dont know, the bikes were invented at the conditions of the actual road bikes to imitate, as in the Tour de France. Therefore, instead of only the possibility of resistance from the way we add all used to do, by changing gear, the wheel in front of the stationary bike (flywheel) weighed. Which means it could weigh between 35 and 55 pounds instead of 1 or 2 pounds. Normally, it would sound like no big deal. But like many of you know, when you decide to stop pedaling on a bicycle, you usually glide or coast. Well you cannot do that on a Spinning bike and Cindy do not realize that until well after the instructor told her to pedal as fast as she could.

After her legs felt like they were flying and then her instructor said she would start climbing a hill and they necessary for the resistance on her bike to raise. The instructor started saying things like, take a full turn up! Another half turn and you must work hard now. Crank down so you feel the road and now add big turn clockwise, climbing the hill and add more resistance by turning it on and now it's really steep.

Cindy had no idea what one of those instructions meant and that's what I'm here to clear up now.

Spinning is a great form of cardio. It is motivating to have an instructor guide you through of a program while surrounded by like-minded participants who are there for the same reasons. You want a good workout slightly less unwanted body fat, keep heart healthy, lighten your own personal stress load and have fun along the road.

The resistance in question is the key tool used to add tension to the flywheel, so you feel if you're climbing a hill or if the button you feel like you're screaming along the road and cruising. As an instructor, I think there should always be a kind of tension.

If you have never taken a class, I would recommend it. But here are a few things to keep in mind before you do. Spinning bikes are often used during the day. This means they have to wear them. Each bike will wear differently and therefore the resistance knob may be tight on a bike and not so tightly on one another.

Bikes in your gyms have resistance mechanisms that may vary greatly. If you decide to approach listening to an instructor based on turning the knob to vary your resistance, you can very hard time by driving with a specific benefit (strength, endurance, etc.).

So What?

Recently I read of a study made by an instructor 21 cycling club that are tested on the different resistance for each bike to see. Here is what he found.

The first measure was the number of revolutions across the road (up counterclockwise) to where he could feel the road. This is a bit subjective, but not very beginning as a rider can tell the difference between free-wheeling wheel and a single resistor offers. The second measure is the number of revolutions of feeling the way thats iti could barely pedal a complete rotation. using his personal limit. How different were the bikes different? The table shows the minimum and maximum number of revolutions between the two bicycles for the measurements, and the total number of turns from bottom to top to end.

The differences between the bikes were usually on the low side. Some riders feel the road after three cycles of the soil, while others will turn (and turn and turn) seven full speed before anything happens. So when riders begin their journeys at the bottom, and the instructor just talks about taking quarter turns, half turns, and fully running, Some riders still free-wheeling while others will already be in a moderately heavy territory. Rider inexperience, coupled with our human tendency to take the easy road as we can while still obeying orders, thwart the instructors plan to guide a round as the traditional categories of benefit. – Results were found by Gordon Bermant Spinning Virginia who teaches in the suburbs of Washington, DC

I want you to learn a few things from this article. First, if you decide to spinning classes is important you are very aware of how you feel and take the amount of energy you spend. This is what you base your workout on, not the specific instructions.

Secondly, I 'm a fan of Spinning and I like the idea of someone pushing you to do your best during your training session for 30-60 minutes. If it cannot be me, I trust it to someone as a group certified training instructor.

Finally, if you go do a course on your own outside of a class setting, remember that not all cardio machines are created equal, particularly the spinning bikes. There is a large part of the maintenance that needs to go on a bike and you should be aware that some bikes are easier to drive than others. If you're on a bike it takes 7 turns just to feel the tension, then you will take you longer to get where you want if you work hard. If you are on a bike who turns 2 turns and you feel The road was just a hill in San Francisco, then you adjust accordingly. I think the idea of variation in your training regimen. And using a spinning cycle is a good alternative to walk on a treadmill or using the elliptical. Cross training is important in my style of training. Learning how to ride when you tough challenging intervals and interpreting of the various resistance needed to rest when you are in a resting phase is an important part of these intervals.

So drop by a Spinning class. If that is not your thing, one of the many cardio routines I have the past 2 years and one of those programs try a Spinning bike. I think the challenge you want.
