Bicycle Headset Guide
Without that, you will not go anywhere. Yes, a bicycle headset is an often overlooked, but oh, so important a part of the bike. Of course, There are several types of bicycle headsets available, so to help you in making the best purchase possible, we have this headset buying guide together with a number of detailed, useful information.
Threaded vs. threadless headsets
For many years, threaded headsets were the only type available. They demand that the fork steerer to be cut to an exact measurement for use with a specific frame. The use of a threadless headset provides greater adjustability and fine tuning in order to achieve the perfect fit. For this reason, threadless headsets are the norm in recent years.
Headset stack height
The stack height is how much the headset to extend above and below the head tube frame. This is important because the headset will take up space on your handlebar, making the space you still have to go. If your steering tube shortened and you're not planning on getting a new fork, pay particular attention to the new headset stack height and make sure you do something to get high. If your current steerer has been cut, stack will not matter so much, and you can headset spacers above or below a stem to give the headset / stem / fork Mounting a nice fit with just the right handlebar height (and no extra cutting).
If you're installing a new fork, use a headset threadless the steerer tube cut to a length that fits various frame sizes. With that said, the old adage of "Measure twice, cut once" is still a great rule of thumb by cutting steerer tube frame / headset combinations to fit. When cutting a steerer, it's a good idea to have a little extra just in case you decide to leave the fork to use a different frame or swap the stem for something a little bigger.
Headset bearings
How do you ride? Are you a recreational cyclist who enjoys to ride 20 miles for a casual or are you more of a free rider who is always looking for the biggest drops?
A bicycle headset works fine with caged bearings for the weekend warrior or the rider who gets a couple of times a month. If you are a serious, daily driver, a headset with sealed bearings offer longer life and better performance. Aggressive road driving requires predictable steering and a high quality cartridge bearing provides just that.
For most, stainless steel bearings are perfect. For racers and really hardcore fans, ceramic bearings are the way to go. They run faster and smoother, making it more responsive steering.
Headset Diameter
The diameter of your steerer and head tube will dictate the size of the headset. You'll find headsets in four different diameters:
- 1-1/8-inch (Most Common)
- 1 – inch (mostly older frames and forks)
- 1.5 inch (downhill bikes)
- Conical (1-1/8 cup above / below 1.5)
Most current frames and forks (which almost always adhesive) require a 1-1/8-inch headsets. 1-inch threaded headsets tend to match their older colleagues, but there are quite a bit in the thread configuration as well. Tapered headsets are a tapered head tube. This type of configuration allows weight savings with increased stiffness. Technology of a conical headset launched in 2009, so only the final frames offer this as an option.
Headset setup
Internal: This kind threadless headset cups that fit into an oversized head tube. Head tube sizes ranging from 44mm to 45mm in diameter. If the cups are pressed into the head tube, The bearings are in the head tube, creating a lower deck.
Integrated: This type is used when the headset bearing cups bound in the frame. Bonding the headset cups into the frame has become commonplace for larger frame manufacturers that primarily deal with carbon fiber. Using an integrated headset, a headset can be installed without the use of expensive devices that can only be found at bike shops.
Standard: This is the most common form of threadless headset with standard head tube. The cups are pressed into the frame, while the bulk of the headset outside the tube. Cup stack height is an important factor to consider, such as a higher pile height, the driving position to increase.
Cost
Really good headsets cost over $ 300. You pay for high-tech, lightweight materials such as carbon or titanium, with ceramic sealed bearings and quality finishes. In many cases you also pay for the brand, but that's not a bad thing. For many cyclists, it's worth, certain brands are known for their high quality engineering and performance.
For those interested in something more affordable, a headset in the $ 50 – $ 150 area will still be more than adequate performance. Most good brands offer headsets in this series, and find many that are durable and lightweight. And if you do not drive too often, you could be less for others, it will maintain for years under lighter use.
Headset Installation
Improper installation of a headset can damage the headtube and headset itself. There are tools that you insert the headset without the pound in the frame with a hammer or a spanner. Most people will not install too many headsets, though, and probably do not need the money to spend on such an instrument. So to help you avoid damage to your new area, we recommend that you use your headset installed by a professional bicycle mechanic. A bicycle headset that is installed and well maintained should last through many years of riding.
