Attractions of Snowdonia: Family Fun in North Wales
The wild, mountainous Snowdonia region of North Wales is described as "the British number one activity, a description that tends to refer to the huge amount of outdoor activities that make the region so popular with an active, adventurous visitors who enjoy the getting a bit muddy on their holidays. And rightly so, in Snowdonia, if you're so inclined, you can choose from these thrilling activities as mountain climbing, canoeing, rafting, surfing, mountain biking, horse riding, abseiling, quad biking, paintball and a good old fashioned walking.
But if you visit Snowdonia with small children, or relatives who do not fancy anything too heavy on their holiday, you may wonder whether a holiday in Snowdonia perhaps a bit too energetic and not very family friendly. You're wrong!
Everywhere in the Snowdonia region there are many attractions suitable for every member of the family, the youngest to the oldest old. Of palaces and gardens-karts and amusement parks go, is Snowdonia packed full of fun attractions and activities for everyone.
On Glasfryn Park near Pwllheli, access and parking are free. Here you can enjoy bowling, archery, quad-biking, fishing and go-karting, and there is a special soft play area and ball pool for kids and toddlers. Glasfryn has an excellent farm shop where quality local products buy, and regular farmers' markets and French markets selling food, drinks and crafts.
There are also regular craft and food fairs in Parc Glynllifon, just outside Caernarfon. Glynllifon the buildings are situated in a beautiful land where you can enjoy a leisurely walk, take the bat trail and explore the beautiful forests, and the end of your visit with a delicious high tea.
In Llanberis, there are so many attractions, it is difficult to list them all! The main attraction in Llanberis, of course, Mount Snowdon – the highest mountain in England and Wales. The longest – but easiest – route to the summit starts in Llanberis, but if you do not fancy walking, there are regular trains to the top and its brand new visitor center, which is easy work of the trip. If you enjoy beautiful train journeys, you will enjoy the narrow gauge steam train trips on the Llanberis Lake Railway. Llanberis is also home to the fascinating and exciting National Slate Museum, Electric Mountain, where you can tour the heart of a mountain and experience one of man's greatest engineering performance.
At Greenwood Forest Park, Y Felinheli, you will find an amusement park with a difference … All rides are powered by you! This pioneering eco-friendly theme park is a true stay-all-day experience, and the admission fee includes use of all major attractions and activities. There is more eco-friendly fun at the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth, where you can take a thrilling ride on a water-powered Cliff Railway – one of the steepest in the world – and learn about sustainable living and renewable energy.
At Corris Craft Centre near Machynlleth you can see artisans at work, creating beautiful handmade gifts for your home, garden and friends. There are ten workshops at the Craft Centre and a playground where your kids can enjoy themselves. Corris Craft Centre is also in King Arthur's Labyrinth, where you can sail through the great waterfall and an underground boat ride, as you hear tales of King Arthur and other ancient Welsh legends in a dramatic setting of huge, ancient caves to take.
Snowdonia is as famous for its castles as it is for its mountains. Take a trip back in time and discover Conwy and Caernarfon, with its well preserved medieval castles and town walls, Harlech and Criccieth Castle, high above the sea to ward off intruders, and Dolbadarn Castle, nestled in the majestic mountains in Llanberis. There is also a Norman style 19th century castellated mansion – Penrhyn Castle – Bangor, where a fascinating Railway Museum.
And if your idea of the perfect family vacation, buckets, shovels and copious amounts of ice cream you will be pleased to discover that Snowdonia has mile after mile of coastline to enjoy. Snowdonia has many traditional seaside destinations like Pwllheli, with its marina and small Fair, Barmouth, with its funfair, promenade and ship wreck museum and Dinas Dinlle, those miles of sandy beach and an open air museum where you can enjoy trips and see the countryside has the air. But there are many quiet, secluded spots along the coast of Snowdonia as Porth Oer, Porthdinllaen and Trefor.
