Musings on cycling and the virtues of the Continental Gator Skin tire Kevlar Lined
We live today in an environmentally conscious society with a global recession, and obsessed with health and beauty. It is no surprise that bicycles have a resurgence in popularity among American consumers enjoyed both a means of exercise and transport, but also as an enjoyable activity and competitive sport. Even counter-culture has embraced the bicycle as an every-man vehicles, much preferred the humble bicycle to the public transport and cars. As a result many colorful and exciting niches of bikes have taken thrive in this new millennium.
Throughout the country millions every Thurs day helmet and riding gloves and clearing the paths, sidewalks and bicycle paths of our beautiful country, but to school, work, local coffee shop or just for fun.
My own interest in cycling began like many others. It was not long after I could walk my parents bought me a tricycle. I graduated on a firm and ultimately a useful Huffy mountain bike. But then something happened. I was a freshman in high school and a bicycle was suddenly passé. Everyone was driving around in cars and trucks and my trusty mountain bike collected dust in the garage when I traded in for a fire engine red 1968 Camaro. Who would have guessed four short years later I would love for my 2 wheel transportation when I went to university to rediscover.
There I was, stranded in a new city, a stranger in a strange land. At this point, the Camaro was passed to my brother, because I would concentrate on my studies at university. Still, walking around was definitely lame. I longed to feel the cool air rush past my face, and moreover, the 15 minutes time to walk calculus was overwhelmed to endure while fighting a hang-over with a cafeteria and past cookie has expired fruit. Suddenly urged on me from behind like a ton of bricks, a dark young man on a rusty old cruiser. Fighting the urge to cry some explicatives on Holy quadrilateral It took everything I had to calm down. In this second of pain I had to run what we alcoholics call a moment of clarity. When I limped towards class I realized that I was the guy , that dark Underclassman, running the cracked tires of a vintage Schwinn in the heels of the unsuspecting. I could become that man.
So a trip to the sporting settled. I was now the owner of a shiny new bike with a silver frame and knobby tires. Ready to each track, every obstacle to the iron horse I was packing only on command. I was grilling her fate. Most of fate that the bike was apparently in the local pub as my friends and I took great pleasure in riding our bikes to the various watering holes. We would often laugh at our exploits, reminiscing the nights when we were just too drunk to drive, but still sober enough to slide behind the wheel. Our laughter would echo off the quiet row houses, tree-lined streets, late autumn break between our wheels as fresh snow.
If my cycling skills improved, so did my interest in cycling mechanics. I often have my bike repaired personally, and because the bike was quite cheap I had a lot of experience. Eventually I graduated from a real bike, a vintage Schwinn World Sport. She was a true touring bike with 12 gears and 27 inch wheels. I was a young man rediscovering myself, losing my mind to the sirens of the city. I would drink large quantities of alcohol and wake up in the morning feeling like death incarnate. Instead of licking my wounds at the bank I force myself to ride. I would drive to sweat out the sin, the poison inside. I would cover great distances to visit a corner of the city I had never seen, exploring new scents and colors, and work out some of that excellent beer belly that managed to appear.
An ever-present danger, however, was the dreaded puncture. Nothing worse than he was only 15 miles from the rear feels the pressure of losing and slowly you start to run underneath. That sickening feeling in the pit of your stomach, understand you stranded, and it would be a long and miserable to walk home, was like nothing else. I would often pack a little extra pump and patches, but even then, some flats were irreparably and disruption of my ride was a big annoyance.
I tried various products to avoid flat tires, tubes and various Goos and inserts. This magical elixirs made from all sorts of lofty claims, vendors promise their brave punctures heal properly. Some of them worked well, and others worked badly. Just as you would expect snake oil in the dog and pony show to cure your cold often left unsatisfied.
So finally I decided to plunge and purchase a few Kevlar lined tires. I thought that if the material was capable of stopping a bullet, a piece of broken glass would certainly be easy work for the bands. Oddly enough I was right. The Continental Gator Skin tire has proven itself to me the most effective preventative maintenance on flat tires. So many bands go, they are not cheap, but if you really want good flats stop and enjoy your rides then this is the only way to getting started.
